Week 11: Class highlights!

This class was so much fun! I went into it thinking it would be a journalism class that had a lot of writing but it was so much better! Learning about the media and how it affects our everyday lives and the way we view the world was so eye-opening. I loved how we got to put on our own tv show because I love to act! Class was super fun and I'm really glad I got to meet all these cool new people and learn about all these new media jobs and ideas!

Week 10: Media Ethics/Media Law

A 2009 Copyright case involved Disney and the character Winnie the Pooh. Apparently, the case has been ongoing for 18 years. Disney fought for 18 years to keep their copyright rights of Winnie the Pooh and all of his friend in the hundred acre woods. Stephen Slesinger is the British creator of the comic book character of Winnie the Pooh and his family gave up rights to the character and his friends of the Hundred Acre Wood after he passed away. However, in 1991, they decided that they got the short end of the stick and wanted to sue Disney for copyright. However, Disney finally won the case this year, 2009, of all copyright rights of Winnie the Pooh and all of his friends of the Hundred Acre Woods.

Week 9: Propaganda in Advertising/PR

I propose a PR campaign called "Remain Abstinent." I would use virtue words such as wise to lure the younger generation into agreeing that it was smart to remain abstinent. I would also stereotype those who have sex at a young age by saying they are all trashy and stupid, so it wouldn't appeal to people. I would use repetition and keep repeating the words abstinent as often as i could. I would make an appeal to fear and scare the young people so they won't want to have sex by telling them things like how many people die from STD's and how many people have babies even if they do wear condoms and are on birth control. Some of this would have to be "half-truths" as well.

Week 8: Electronic News

I watched Kron 4 news for about a half hour. There were stories on the Oprah Winfrey show going off air in 2011, a gang-rape at a highschool that happened weeks ago, and some short coverage on the controversial idea of a movie being made about the girl who was kidnapped and raised by a crazy man. Every 8 minutes, there was a weather and traffic report that last about 3 minutes so the actual news only got about 12 minutes of time on the air. Advertisements came on every couple of minutes and lasted about a minute or two. There wasn't much sports on the news, but there was some "happy talk" going on between the anchors that was not valuable to viewers. The lead story was about the Oprah show going off air in 2011 and I think it was the lead story because she had been around for so many years and the show is the most popular show of the 20th century. The show has feautured every well-known guest that has had an interesting story and has adressed a broad range of issues. The anchors talked about the closing of the show in a very monotone voice but the words were sad.

Week 7: Internet

I found 11,731 results for social working websites on wikipedia.org. I have only heard of facebook, myspace, friendster, linkedin and twitter. They were all listed here. I had never heard of LiveJournal because I have never blogged before now. It is a social website where you can keep a blog, or journal online and share it with whoever you want to. I use these websites to keep in touch with my friends and family by writing to them and sharing pictures with them. I use facebook very often and myspace sometimes. One time, I did not have my phone at home with me and I do not keep a record of friend's and family's phone numbers, so I couldn't call my friend to tell him that I had left my phone in his car. Then, I went on facebook, and his number was on his profile page so I used my house phone to call him and he dropped my phone off to me. This is when facebook really helped me!

Week 5: Movies or Recordings

My favorite movie of 2009 was "Up." I first saw it at the movie theaters with my best friend. I liked it because it made me feel like a kid again, and the old man learned a valuable lesson from a child. He went on a great adventure that he had been waiting for his whole life, and he realized that it was not what he thought it would be and the rest of his past was what was important. It is animated and a really cute film!

Week 4: Magazines

The name of my proposed new magazine is "The Right Figure." It is a workout magazine that let's you work at your own pace and helps you come up with your own personal plan to get the body you want. It is not like other workout magazines because unlike it's competitors such as Shape, it does not make you feel bad about your weight or body type by showing pictures of models doing workouts. Instead, it shows many different women and their stories about how they got the bodies and health that they wanted. This magazine targets women and is mostly for the female body and female health problems. There will be 3 big feature articles that will tell the stories of regular women who improved their health and body types by forming plans that fit their schedules. There will also be one article from a doctor's point of view that emphasizes the importance of a healthy looking body inside and out. In addition to these 4, another article will discuss different ways to plan out your workout around your busy schedule. Five advertisers in the magazine would include, Bebe Sport clothing, Organic cracker providers, The Right Stuff and 24 hour fitness gym facilities and Whole Foods Market. The premier issue cover would be full of color and feature some of the stories and advertisements on the inside. It would have the title at the top and many woman of different ethnic backgrounds, different ages, and different body types on the cover as well.

Week 3: Books

I've read a lot of books in my lifetime, but if I had to choose the three most influential, they would be the following: Tuesday's With Morrie, Romeo & Juliet, and The Color Purple. First off, Tuesday's with Morrie influenced me to live life in the now and make the most out of life. The young man in the story was consumed by his job and money and was therefore wasting away his life and pushing away his loved ones. The old man, Morrie taught him valuable lessons about life and I learned a lot as well. The second book, Romeo & Juliet was influential to me because it was the greatest love story I have every read. It tells the tale of two lovers who were truly in love. The last story, The Color Purple, was about black people before the civil rights movement and it was important to me because it showed the impact that racism has on victims and also how hard things were for them in the old days.

Week 2: Media Impact

For my media research project, I would like to test out the idea that drug use in the media has a large impact on children in today's society. I would test out the social learning theory by talking to 2 groups of children at different ages and seeing how they view drug use. I predict that kids will see drugs as normal and unharmful because they see it so much in the media. I believe that socialization also plays a role in how children view norms of society.

Week 1: Media Autobiography

The media has always been an important part of my life. Growing up, I watched television with my sisters while my mom was busy cooking or cleaning the house. We used to listen to the radio and cd's all the time and I soon became immune to sounds of music being involved in my daily routine. During my days in junior highschool, magazines were a popular subscription among my friends and family so I read age appropriate magazines and pulled pictures of actors and actresses out to hang up around my bedroom. Nowadays, the media is still a huge part of my life and plays an important role in my daily routine. I always find myself listening to music on the radio or computer whether I be doing homework, like I am right now, cooking, cleaning, dressing up, walking, driving, exercising, or my passion in life, dancing. In my spare time, I love to read fiction novels such as Twilight and Harry Potter to keep my mind creative. Magazines sort of faded out with age and I don't find myself looking at them too much unless I'm searching for new exercise workouts in my mother's latest copy of Shape magazine. Television is a huge part of my life and I have many favorite shows both old and new that I keep up with and hate to miss out on each week. I enjoy going to the movie theatres with friends on the weekends to see the latest films and also renting movies whenever I have time from either the library or the nearest blockbuster. When it comes to the internet, I am a junkie. I know all about it and my family and friends always come to me when trying to set up or find something on the internet. I'm an avid "facebooker" and I love to email and keep online diaries. I love exploring the internet for cool new websites and I use google on a daily basis to look up all sorts of things. My current major is Sociology and so far my studies in the area have led me to believe that this major can take me into any career choice so a career in the media may be an option, but I'm not sure specifically where just yet. Hopefully this class will help me out!
